The Rise and Fall and Rebirth of Digg

It seems almost inconceivable that a site that managed to attract well over 230 million visitors every year, could manage to fall from grace so spectacularly that it managed to fold in the space of a few years from that pinnacle.

That is the scenario that played out with the social sharing site Digg.

The popularity of Digg just grew and grew after it launched and it hit a peak back in 2008, but by 2010, it had managed to shed about a third of that number of visitors and problems were stacking up to such an extent that it didn’t even survive to see out that year.

There was a fair chance that something that was so popular and so integral to the internet at one point, might just manage to rise like a phoenix from the ashes, and we are now witnessing the rebirth of Digg.

This infographic takes a look at the reasons why Digg managed to fall out of favor in the first place, and what has been going on behind the scenes to breathe new life into something that was pronounced dead at one point.

Understanding what Digg could do and how users were able to interact with the site, is perhaps the key to working out how it can work its way back into the psyche of online users and become an integral part of their activities and observations.

Technology might have something to do with the rise in popularity of the new Digg. Improvements in the site are there for all to see and from a modest 25,000 users back in 2005 when the new site took its first tentative steps into the online world, it had already climbed to 43 million registered users, just four years later.

Not bad progress for a site that showed no signs of life just a short time ago.
