How to set up a Home Network

Setting a home network is not difficult for the regular users but new users find it difficult to have the full access of all the devices connected to a home network. As home network includes all the printers, file sharing storage, wireless router and internet modem device, so setting and placing all these devices in a right way is a little bit tricky.

As everyone can not stick with the Ethernet cable every time when you have Wi-Fi supported devices as well. So to set a strong home network following are some of the key points to kept in mind.

Set up modem

A modem is a device which will be provided by ISP for accessing the internet. So whenever modem stops providing the internet then ISP technician will come to make it working again. Instead of calling ISP technician you can set your modem on your own.

While setting your modem to make sure that it is OFF. There will be only one place usually at the top of other ports which will be used to plug in the designated cable. This cable will be used to have the access to internet.

Now after plugging in the designated cable turn on your modem and led lights will start blinking. There should be two lights with label send and receive, both these lights will stop blink and turn the online lights ON once the connection is established. If not then check that correct cable provided by ISP is plugged in the device. If still online lights do not appear to change the outlet.

But before experimenting all above steps make sure that your modem is registered by your ISP.

Setting up Router

After setting the modem properly it’s time to set and place the wifi router. If you have a new router then connect the modem and router by plugging the ethernet cable into the LAN port of the router. Before using the router as a wifi you need to connect your PC to the router through cable so that you can set initially basic things.

To access the internet from every corner of your house the best place to set the router is the center of the house. So try to place the router in a center, same is the case with all others shared device i.e printer, storage devices etc.

Once the router is placed, now access the router web interface from your computer by using routers IP address which is usually 192.168.0.1. You can set network name and password from the settings of the routers.

Just in case you don’t have a router right now, go to this list of recommended routers by ListEnthusiast.com

Security Settings.

Most of the routers have by default WPS which is a wifi protected setup to protect your wifi device from attackers. But recently researchers have discovered that WPS is not a strong way to save your network from hackers.

So, for security reasons you can disable SSID from broadcasting, this is how unknown devices will never found your router.
